1 – Roll Top Bread Box from Golden Oak
The Roll Top Bread Box from Golden Oak is a really classic wooden bread box which would look stunning in a traditional wooden kitchen or any kitchen in the country. The box is more than practical and the beautiful design makes it special enough to have on show, or even kept in the living room for evening tea.
They’re all also custom made to order, made by hand by craftsmen with decades of experience at Golden Oak. The roll top bread box is one of their most popular items, and wouldn’t at all be unfit to give as a gift for christmas, or a wedding or anniversary.
The lid slides the shutter upward to reveal the contents, and downward to secure them, the design from this point of view couldn’t be more simple, and the thick, solid craftsmanship means it’s built for life, justifying the slightly higher price tag.
2 – Wesco Grandy Bread Storage BoxIt’s easy to see why the Wesco Grandy bread box is a real people’s favourite, having scored 5 stars from over 95% of their customers. The retro steel tin vintage box is very handsome, and has a real unique charm to it.
The powder coated sheet steel is made to last for decades too, meaning that the investment you’re making is longterm. The back has ventilation holes for keeping the bread fresh, and the hinges are made from solid metal too.
The most impressive feature about the Wesco Grandy bread box though is the size, or should we say capacity. Capacity is better since the Wesco Grandy bread box doesn’t actually look that large, and is made in a superefficient shape for storing as much bread as possible, curved on at the top and bottom to be the perfect fit for your loaf.
Even when using home bread maker machines with the largest capacity, you could still fit up to three full loaves in the bread storage box, making it ideal for larger families, or bread fanatics.
3 – Brabantia Roll Top Bread BoxThe roll top bread box from Brabantia is sturdy, sleek, and comes at a great price. The sleek silver matches the design of the shape which curves upward, saving space and making the box compact even when opened.
The capacity is pretty impressive, despite the compact size and two large loaves of bread can fit with room to spare. Other features include the base which is patterned with ventilation holes to help keep bread fresh for longer, and a flat top to allow for more storage space around the bread box.
Whilst there are some features we love about the Brabantia roll top bread box, it is a little more basic than some of the others that we’ve listed. The material is a little more lightweight, and somewhat less durable than it could be, and unless in the right surrounding, might look a little cheap.
Though this said it is a fairly attractive design, shape, and finish, and it comes with a lower price tag than most of the other premium units. For this reason it makes one of the best choices on the market it you’re looking for a great and practical, but low cost bread box.

4 – Brabantia Fall Front Bread BoxNow we have to say that we’re really big fans of the fall front bread box model from Brabantia. It is fairly lightweight, and a little flimsy perhaps, plus if you’re looking for a big bread box for a large family then maybe this one isn’t up to the task.
If however you’re looking for a small bread box for storing one or two small loaves at a time, for a really great and affordable price, then this one is definitely worth checking out. The sleek design in silver and black will be a classy addition to any kitchen side.
The bread box comes with nice little touches like a smudge proof finish, ideal for the reflective design, and the magnet for keeping the lid closed is a nice touch. As well as all this the bread box comes with a ten year guarantee which is great.
5 – Blue Donuts Bread BoxNext up in our bread box list is this really neat minimalist design from Blue Donuts. The design is so simple as to almost go unnoticed, blending in elegantly with any kitchen. The bamboo covers most of the surface, with a thin translucent door which opens and closes up and down.
The translucent door allows the bread to be seen from outside, reminding you how much you have, and giving an attractive and appetising appeal to your kitchen.
Plus the bread box is fairly compact in size, making for a pleasant appearance. Although the box is compact though the shape is very practical, and two large bread loaves can fit inside easily.
In addition to all the great points we’ve pointed out about the Blue Donuts bread box, it’s also one of the cheapest on the market, and comes in at a far lower price than any of the other bread boxes we’ve reviewed. If price is a main concern for you, then this is perfect, but it’s also pretty darn great if you’re looking for one with a lovely appearance, and a decent size.
6 – Mountain Woods Extra Large Antique Style Bread BoxFinally on our list of bread boxes is another antique style option, however this one unlike most actually comes in at the lower end of the price range, making it quite unique. The mountain Woods company have an actively ethical outlook and have been producing highquality kitchenware for over half a century.
The Acacia hardwood they use comes from the largest Acacia plantation in the world, in Asia. The farm maintains the highest standards of ethical farming, as well as environmentally friendly forestry practices.
It provides enough space for two smaller loaves of bread, or one large loaf with a few rolls, croissants or whatever your personal preference, slightly less than some of the other storage units.
However the bread box comes with plenty of nice features, including the elegant fold out door which closes securely thanks to the magnetic lid and metal edges.
Do I Need a Bread Box?
When storing bread, particularly your freshly home baked bread, it’s important to do it right. The first thing to do is to make sure that you wrap your bread securely. Just use some sort of plastic wrap or aluminum foil all the way around the bread, and find your place to store it.
For new bread that you’ll be eating in the next day or two the best place to store bread is in a bread box. If you haven’t got a bread box then we can recommend you invest in one, alternatively use the cupboard, but not the refrigerator. Studies have shown that putting bread in the fridge actually makes it go stale faster than leaving it at room temperature.
How Do I Store Bread?
For the bread that you can’t quite eat after a couple of days, keep it wrapped up and freeze it, this way it’s ready waiting for you whenever you need, and is great as a backup, or for when you’re feeling lazy to bake.
Just make sure when freezing bread that you fully thaw it before use, consuming bread that’s still partly frozen can be unpleasant and unhealthy.
What to do with stale bread?
Inevitably you will from time to time end up with stale bread, though if you’ve been throwing it away all these years then you’ve been making a big mistake! There are dozens of tasty recipes you can make from you stale bread, and they’re often delicacies.
1. One great example is traditional british bread and butter pudding.
2. My next favourite use would be for a nice slice of french toast in the morning.
3. Number three is breadcrumbs, useful for all sorts of things from katsu curry to pesto sauce.
Be sure to look around elsewhere for other tasty treats you can keep your stale bread from, but just remember, don’t throw it out right away!
